BMW is the car brand which has been involved in most car crashes in the past 12 months, new research has found.

In new data from Slater and Gordon, 21 per cent of all road collisions involved a BMW, which includes crashes that were the fault of the BMW driver and those that were not.

The survey raises questions as to why BMW, one of the most popular car brands in the UK, are more likely to be involved in car crashes.

Over the years, it has been a commonly held view that BMW drivers are aggressive and impatient, often associated with dangerous driving practices such as speeding.

The survey highlighted 58 per cent of people believed speeding to be the primary cause of road collisions, as well as others believing drivers using their phone is the main cause of distraction in road collisions, at 57 per cent.

For Road Safety Week 2024, the research named other car brands involved in collisions, with Ford as the second most common car at 15 per cent, followed by Toyota at 13 per cent and Mercedes-Benz at 10 per cent.

As a popular choice of vehicle, BMW are seen as a reliable car brand. Recently, their infotainment system iDrive was deemed as the least distracting infotainment system in a 2020 survey by What Car.

The annual campaign, Road Safety Week, is a significant reminder for drivers to address and educate people about road safety, to reduce the devastating numbers of injuries and fatalities that happen each year.

Crystal Eaton, Serious Injury Lawyer, supports clients nationally in road traffic collision claims. She comments: “It is concerning to hear the statistic that 20% of people involved in car crashes were driving a BMW.

Although, whilst common perception may see certain car brands having drivers with negative characteristics, this statistic truly boils down to the responsibility of each driver doing their upmost to follow safe driving methods.

For Road Safety Week, I urge everyone to reflect on their driving behaviour and remind ourselves of the devastating consequences of car crashes due to careless driving.”
