Yvonne Agnew

Head of Medical Negligence - Cardiff

I'm one of the most experienced medical negligence solicitors in the country dealing with the most complex cases and achieving some of the highest value settlements nationwide. The team at Cardiff are knowledgeable experienced and dedicated to achieving the best possible results for our clients.

Get to know Yvonne

I qualified as a solicitor in 1986 and have over three decades of experience in representing clients who’ve suffered as a result of medical negligence, and I have spent the majority of my career work at Slater and Gordon having started at the firm in 1999.

I specialise in dealing with complex and high value clinical negligence cases and have extensive I experience in all types of medical negligence cases, particularly in relation to high value and complex birth injury, brain injury and spinal/vascular injury claims.

I’m known for my ability to achieve high awards of damages in maximum severity cases. I am also known for my tenacity and determination in representing families who are dealing on a daily with devastating injuries and need my support to achieve a better future.

Career highlights

One of my career highlights was when my expertise was recognised, and I was asked to form part of the working party appointed by the Welsh Assembly Government to advise on the implementation of the Redress Act in Wales.

I am also honoured to work alongside respected charities to ensure that the most vulnerable in society have the care and support that they need. I consider it a personal highlight every time a client can look forward to a secure financial future with the care they need to ensure a better quality of life.

I have also worked on several high profile cases that have gained media attention, including a case where a woman who suffered catastrophic brain injuries when she was deprived of oxygen as a baby, received £19.8 million in compensation which reflects the severity of the injuries sustained and the future care costs, as they now care 24 hours a day.

Recognition

I’m an accredited member of the Law Society Clinical Negligence Panel and am also an accredited member of AvMA (Action Against Medical Accidents).

For the past several years, I've also been ranked in independent legal guides, Chambers and Partners and Legal 500.

The 2023 edition of the Legal 500 ranks me a ‘Leading Individual’ and referred to me as "a first-class lawyer in every respect."

I’m also ranked in the 2023 edition of Chambers and Partners as a Band 2 lawyer, which states: “Yvonne Agnew is noted for her experience in the field of clinical negligence. She has strength handling claims relating to negligent post-operative care and birth injuries, including cerebral palsy cases." They noted my strengths as being "knowledgeable, personable and wants the best outcome in matters."

I've been recognised as one of the best clinical negligence lawyers in Cardiff since 2009 from Best Lawyers.

The extra mile

I’m a member of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL) and am also an accredited member of the AvMA and Law Society Specialist Panels.

I enjoy doing my bit to support local charities, including Cerebral Palsy Cymru and Headway's Cardiff branch, happy to give of my own time to aid fundraising activities and encourage my teams to do the same.
