Woman suffers serious injuries after being hit by car

A pedestrian who sustained serious injuries and life-changing mobility issues after being hit by a car is now looking to the future with support from serious injury specialists at Slater and Gordon.

23 January 2025

The woman was crossing the road when she was struck by a car, which was travelling above the speed limit, throwing her into the air. The collision caused severe injuries, including a serious hip injury and fractures to her leg and spine.

The incident took place in March 2020 as the woman was walking home from a coffee shop after meeting her sister. She spent five weeks in hospital and underwent surgery, which resulted in her left leg being shortened.

She continues to suffer from pain and numbness in her left hip and leg, along with significant psychological effects. While she previously suffered from chronic pain, her injuries have severely worsened her condition, leaving her reliant on the support of carers, and her family, to live independently.

Nearly five years on, the woman, who is in her 50s, still faces mobility challenges. She has to use a stick or Zimmer frame to move around and struggles with anxiety about going out and leaving the house alone.

With support from Slater and Gordon, she has made strong progress in her recovery. The law firm has helped her access a range of tailored therapies – including physiotherapy and psychological support – and her rehabilitation has been overseen by a dedicated case manager. In addition, Slater and Gordon also secured a six-figure settlement from the motorist’s insurer to assist the woman with funding her care and future needs.

Gulderen Salih, a serious injury specialist and senior associate at Slater and Gordon, and her team supported the woman through her claim.

“This has been a hugely traumatic experience for our client, whose injuries will impact her for the rest of her life. Her mobility issues and ongoing pain have presented great challenges to her independence, and she needs the support of visits from carers, as well as her family, to enable her to live her life,” says Gulderen.

“Through our intervention, she has made excellent progress through the rehabilitation and therapies that met her exact needs, and the appointment of a case manager supported this further. The financial package will also enable her to fund her care and associated needs going forward – after such a difficult time for our client, this will give her security for the future.”
