Police portal launched for Operation Bramber information

An online portal has been created for people to pass on information relevant to the police investigation into the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

17 June 2024

Sussex Police launched Operation Bramber in May last year, which is investigating allegations of negligence within the scandal-hit hospital’s general surgery and neurosurgery departments between 2015 and 2021.

The investigation is understood to include more than 100 cases, with at least 40 being deaths at the Brighton hospital, part of the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust.

While Sussex Police have said they are proactively contacting patients and families whose cases form part of Operation Bramber, they continue to look for evidence ahead of any decision being made over criminal charges. The force has launched a portal for anyone with information they believe may be relevant to the investigation.

As well as people coming forward with information about their own experiences of allegedly sub-standard treatment at the hospital, evidence from whistle blowers has also been crucial. Two surgeons who worked at the Royal Sussex – Dr Mansour Foroughi and Dr Krishna Singh – have claimed they told leaders at the Trust that patients were dying unnecessarily nearly five years before police became involved.

We are representing a growing number of individuals and families who have been impacted by poor standards of care at the Royal Sussex, including several cases which form part of Operation Bramber.

“We are now more than a year into Operation Bramber and we know from our own clients’ experiences how distressing their experience of care at the Royal Sussex has been,” says Nisha Sharma, Principal Lawyer and clinical negligence specialist based in our Brighton office.

“While the ongoing investigation must be rigorous and comprehensive, and must of course take all the time it needs, it is imperative that anyone with information which could help Operation Bramber comes forward.

“We are supporting an increasing number of people whose cases form part of this investigation, who of course want answers as to why they or their loved ones experienced what they did at this hospital. We hope through our own work, and that of Operation Bramber, we can help families to achieve some clarity and certainty during what remains a very difficult and unknown time.”
